About the Shepard Niles Heavy-Duty Hoist

At Shepard Niles. we have a hundred-year-old reputation for building the toughest hoists in the business. Now, we can offer you a hoist that's more than tough-- it's also one of the most technically advanced.

Our new line of heavy-duty hoists rated up to 40 tons features low-headroom designs, totally enclosed two-speed motors, and hardened, ground-form gearing for long life. We specialize in hoists for CMAA Class D and E applications-- workhorse products that stand up to heavy use. If you need a hoist that runs longer and makes more lifts, operating up to 52 minutes out of every hour, you need a Shepard Niles hoist-- now backed by the expedited delivery, service and product warranty of KCI Konecranes.

Remember, Shepard Niles continues to manufacture first quality, OEM replacement parts for all Shepard Niles cranes and hoists ever built.

Hoists from 1/2 to 20 tons

Our hot metal carriers rated up to 10 tons and smaller severe-duty hoists rated from 1/2 to 20 tons are engineered for class HC and H4 duty, and offer a wide variety of features that make them among the toughest hoists on the market.

Some of these features include:

Maximum Heat Dissipation for Better On-Time Performance
The Shepard Niles cylindrical hoist design keeps major components (motor, mechanical load brake, motor brake) separated to better diffuse heat build-up. In addition, each individual component is designed for maximum heat dissipation. Our thermal tests have proven that heat is evenly radiated throughout the entire 360 degrees of the housing – without the hot spots associated with other designs.

Exclusive Planetary Gearing Design For Longer Life
Shepard Niles’ planetary gearing provides a balanced drive system which ensures long bearing life. Loads are divided among three gears instead of one, greatly extending bearing life and hoist dependability. Because the planetary arrangement uses space more efficiently, Shepard Niles’ cylindrical hoist is significantly smaller than hoists using a spur gear arrangement.

Mechanical Load Brake for Dependable, Smooth Lowering Control
The multiple-disc mechanical load brake will hold the full load independently of the motor brake and prevents load acceleration when lowering. A larger area of braking surface provides two to three times the holding power of most other makes with only 1/4 the pressure, and is externally adjustable. More braking surface plus lower operating pressure means less wear and longer brake life.

Hoists from 5 to 40 tons

The Shepard Niles base-mounted and double girder trolley hoist rated for 5 tons and over is a rugged hoist intended for use in severe service CMAA Class D and E applications where standard, off-the shelf hoist units are not an option. In addition to heavy-duty construction, these hoists offer the advantages of a small hook approach, space-saving design, silent, vibration-free running and minimal maintenance.
